NEWS FROM THE PREVIOUS CHARITY EVENT
The rain was the
only unwelcome guest at the third annual Off-Road Family Fun Ride, presented by Maxxis Tires, on Sunday, May 7, 2006. The event was again held at the Aonia Pass Motocross and Off-Road Park in Washington,
GA. The rain started before daylight, but it could not discourage the volunteers
who had worked so hard to prepare for the event to benefit the Dream House for Medically Fragile Children. Attendance this
year was about one third of normal, but 87 determined riders brought their donations and registered, in spite of the soggy
conditions.
Allen Gravitt, 17-time SETRA off-road racing champion, signed posters and t-shirts. Hunter Floyd, chaplain for the CART racing circuit, conducted a brief
chapel service. Jeff Jansma, Development Manager for the Dream House, told about their mission and the children they have
helped and their plans for the future. The stories of these homeless, medically fragile children and their circumstances got
the riders revved up to start their fund raising efforts for next year’s ride. Penni Tench was presented the Volunteer
of the Year award for her years of service organizing the peewee track activities. Mike Klozer, Darwin Lyons and Jim Wascher
were recognized for raising over $1,000 each for the Dream House. The top fund raisers this year were the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity from
the Georgia Institute of Technology with $2,000. The total of the donations was over $21,000. The riders burst into applause
when the winning ticket was drawn and the men from Tech won the new United Motors DTF 150 dirt bike donated by United Motors
of America and presented by Keith Ottinger.
When riding time came, everyone stayed under the big top meeting tent and watched the torrential
rain pour down. For the next two hours the riders enjoyed the free lunch and talked with new-found friends. There really were
a lot of smiling faces. Good feelings and good company made up for the bad weather. The motocross track and the peewee track
were too slick to ride, but a few hearty souls made a lap of the 10-mile woods trail. Most just loaded up and headed home.
Even though they couldn’t ride, everyone went home happy with a great effort by the off-road community for the children
of the Dream House.
